SAP FICO consultant: role, path and interview
Written by an SAP Finance & Treasury practitioner working with SAP since 2008 · how the guides are written · Updated
An SAP FICO consultant is the person who designs, configures and supports both finance areas of an SAP system: FI, the external books, and CO, the internal cost and profitability view. Most projects staff the two as one seat, and what makes the seat distinct is the seam where they meet.
Job boards also call it an SAP finance consultant, an SAP FI/CO consultant or an S/4HANA finance consultant; the work behind the titles is the same. This guide covers what the seat owns, the objects that sit on the seam, the skills and certifications the market asks for, and how the career runs, as of October 2026.
What is SAP FICO?
SAP FICO is the market's shorthand for two SAP areas bought, configured and staffed together: Financial Accounting and Controlling. SAP FI holds the general ledger, payables, receivables, fixed assets and bank accounting — everything that ends in statutory accounts. SAP CO holds cost centres, internal orders, product costing and profitability — everything management uses to decide. In S/4HANA both halves post into the Universal Journal (ACDOCA), a single table of line items, which is why the market keeps treating them as one discipline.
The combined seat is the norm on small and mid-sized implementations and on most support contracts. Large programmes split it again — general ledger, receivables and payables, assets, cost accounting, product costing, profitability — often with one person per stream, and almost nobody is equally strong in both halves.
What does an SAP FICO consultant do day to day?
They own the finance design and every question that lands on it. On an implementation that means the enterprise structure from company code to controlling area, the ledger and currency setup, the chart of accounts including the cost accounts, cost and profit centre master data, the allocation and settlement logic, and the close. On a support contract it means the tickets that arrive on working day two, when a posting will not go through or a cost centre report does not match the ledger and somebody needs to know why by lunchtime.
A FICO consultant is also the owner of last resort for other areas' postings. Goods receipts, billing documents, payroll results and maintenance orders all end as finance documents, so a problem that started in logistics is usually reported to finance. Reading such a document backwards to the setting that produced it is a large part of the job, and the deliverables follow from it: the finance solution design, configuration and its transport trail, functional specifications for reports and interfaces, end-to-end test evidence, the finance migration and reconciliation plan, the closing calendar, and the first live close in hypercare.
Where do FI and CO meet in S/4HANA?
They meet in a handful of settings that decide which G/L account and which cost object every posting gets. In ECC the halves kept separate books, with cost elements as their own master data and a reconciliation ledger for cross-company postings inside CO. S/4HANA removed most of that: every cost element is now a G/L account, created in FS00 with an account type of primary or secondary costs and a cost element category (SAP Help Portal), and FI and CO line items share the Universal Journal. What is left of the seam is the set below — the objects the separate FI and CO guides treat only from their own side.
| Seam object | Set or read in | What it decides |
|---|---|---|
| Cost element as G/L account | FS00; KA01 no longer creates them separately | Every CO posting is also a ledger posting under that account |
| Default account assignment | OKB9 | Which cost centre or profit centre an expense receives when the posting carries none |
| Account determination for goods movements | OBYC | Which account a receipt, issue or price difference hits, and so which cost line it reaches |
| Revenue account determination | VKOA | Which revenue and deduction accounts a billing document posts to before margin analysis reads them |
| Profit centre on every line | KE51 for the master; derivation and document splitting in configuration | Whether a balance sheet by profit centre or segment is possible |
| One line-item view of both halves | FAGLL03H | G/L line items shown with their cost centre, order and profit centre, read from ACDOCA |
Two consequences shape the weekly work. A difference between a cost centre report and the profit and loss statement is now a design question — a missing account assignment, a statistical posting — rather than a reconciliation run. And because allocations and settlements post under secondary cost accounts in the same journal, chart-of-accounts design needs the controller in the room from the first workshop. Most of these objects also have a Fiori app beside the transaction; on a public-cloud project the apps and configuration activities replace the transactions entirely.
What skills does an SAP FICO consultant need?
Accounting first, configuration second, and the ability to follow a posting into someone else's area third. The skills a hiring manager checks for:
- The accounting behind the settings — accruals, valuation, depreciation, cost allocation and contribution margins, well enough to argue with a controller in their own terms.
- Configuration of one half in depth and working configuration of the other, from enterprise structure to the close.
- Integration reading — valuation classes and transaction keys into procurement, account assignment groups and pricing into sales.
- Data and reporting — migration of balances and open items, reconciliation, and enough Fiori analytics to answer a report request without a developer.
- Writing and explaining — a design document someone can read in three years, and a sentence a finance director accepts.
Which FICO certification should you take?
Take the certification for the half you are strongest in, then the other one, because SAP certifies the two separately. As of October 2026 the catalogue offers two system-based exams: SAP Certified - SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, Financial Accounting and SAP Certified - SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, Management Accounting. Accountants usually start with the first, controllers and cost accountants with the second; a hiring manager seeing only one of the two assumes the other half is thin. How the exams are sold, renewed and weighed against experience is in the SAP certification guide.
How long does it take to learn FICO?
Study covers the configuration of one half; being trusted with the whole seat takes at least one full cycle of real closes, and usually an implementation lived from design to hypercare. The order most people follow:
- One half, properly — usually FI for accountants and CO for controllers, through a learning journey, a practice system and the certification exam for that half.
- The close, live — a support seat or key-user role where you watch month-end run and break.
- The other half — learned on a project that needs it, usually the first time you design an allocation or a costing run someone else relies on.
- The seam — the integration settings above, learned by fixing postings that arrive from logistics.
Background changes the pace far more than the course does, as how long it takes to learn SAP explains for every area.
How does a FICO career develop?
From one half to both, then to the lead seat, then to a branch. The first seat is often a key user or finance professional crossing over, a graduate on a partner programme, or a junior in an AMS team taking finance tickets. The lead owns the finance workstream on an implementation or conversion, including the close and the migration sign-off. The branches are finance solution architecture, group reporting and consolidation, treasury, receivables management, electronic invoicing and tax, or the S/4HANA finance conversion itself — the one with a date on it, since every ECC finance design has to move before ECC maintenance ends, and a functional consultant from finance is always on that critical path.
What do FICO interviews test?
They test whether you can follow a problem across the seam, from a posting in one half to its cause in the other. The scenarios, and the settings to name while answering them, are in SAP FI interview questions.
