SAP PP explained: manufacturing in SAP
Manufacturing — classically PP, Production Planning — is the SAP area that decides what a plant builds, when, from which components and on which work centres, and records what actually happened. It covers the master data of making, the planning runs that turn demand into orders, and the execution of those orders on the shop floor.
What the area covers
- Manufacturing master data — bills of material, routings (master recipes in process industries), work centres, production versions.
- Demand and planning — planned independent requirements, MRP types and lot sizes, and the MRP run that turns demand into planned orders and purchase requisitions (MRP Live on S/4HANA).
- Capacity and detailed scheduling — capacity evaluation and levelling, and PP/DS, now embedded in the core, not a separate system.
- Discrete manufacturing — production orders: release, staging, shop papers, confirmations, goods receipt.
- Process manufacturing (PP-PI) — process orders, master recipes, control recipes and PI sheets for batch industries that must prove what went into what.
- Repetitive manufacturing and KANBAN — rate-based production with backflush instead of order-by-order paperwork.
- Variant configuration and subcontracting — configurable materials where every unit differs; supplier operations inside your own order.
- Shop-floor integration — interfaces to MES and machine data, from IDoc-fed connections to SAP Digital Manufacturing.
What does an SAP Manufacturing consultant actually do?
Early on you sit in fit-to-standard workshops with production planners and the people who release orders, and you walk the line: the design questions (make-to-stock or make-to-order, order-based or rate-based, where the backflush point sits) get answered by what happens on the floor, not by the slide. The artefacts are a process design per plant, configured order types and scheduling parameters, MRP settings per material, functional specs for shop papers and MES interfaces, migration templates for BOMs and routings, and test scripts running the chain from requirement to planned order to production order to confirmation to settlement.
In build and test the week is configuration, then integration cycles with the Procurement, Quality and Controlling consultants: a manufacturing defect is rarely contained to one area. At cutover it turns physical: open orders, work in progress on the line, stock counts, a freeze window negotiated with people who lose money for every idle hour.
How do people get into SAP Manufacturing?
- From the domain — production planners, schedulers and manufacturing engineers already own the process; configuration is the easier half to learn.
- From the key-user seat — the plant's own PP power user, already trusted by the floor (the key-user route).
- From an adjacent area — MM consultants who kept hitting components and subcontracting; CO consultants who arrived through product costing.
- Technical crossover — developers who wrote shop papers and confirmation reports, or MES and automation engineers moving up from the machine side.
What gets someone hired is describing one plant end to end: its manufacturing type, how deep the bills of material go, how confirmations reach the system, what broke at go-live — better evidence than a course (how experience is read).
What it pairs with
CO is the closest border: product costing comes from your bills of material and routings, and every order settles with a variance someone must explain — hence PP+CO as a double specialism. QM sits inside the order as in-process inspection; MM supplies components; Supply Chain & Logistics stages material to the line. Asset Management shares the equipment world: a machine under maintenance is capacity you do not have (more combinations).
Where it is going
Planning that once lived in a separate system has moved into the core, so detailed scheduling is becoming ordinary PP scope, not a neighbouring specialism. The shop-floor layer is drifting the other way, into its own product surface, so interface literacy — what the plant sends up, what the core sends down — matters more than screen knowledge ever did (what the platform shift means for careers).
