SAP career paths: the roles across the ecosystem

SAP careers span three families of roles — consulting, architecture, and product, delivery and leadership — and the roles below are the ones you'll actually meet on projects, grouped the way the work groups itself. SAP work is broader than "consultant", and most people move between neighbouring roles over a career rather than climbing one ladder.

Consulting

• Functional consultant — configures an SAP area (Finance, Sales, Procurement…) to a business's processes.
• Technical consultant — builds where configuration ends: extensions, interfaces, performance.
• Developer — ABAP and modern SAP development as a primary craft.
• Data & analytics consultant — reporting, warehousing and planning landscapes. On Workomap this is an area, not a role — see below.
• Data migration consultant — moving legacy data into SAP, cleanly and reconciled.
• Basis & platform consultant — the system layer: installation, operation, transports. On Workomap this is an area, not a role — see below.

• AMS / support consultant — keeping live systems healthy and improving them incrementally.

Architecture

• Solution architect — owns the design of one solution end to end.

Product, delivery & leadership

• Business analyst and key user / business process owner — the bridge roles between business and system; a classic entry point into consulting.

• Project manager, program manager and test & quality manager — making delivery actually land.
• Delivery / engagement manager — the commercial and staffing side of consulting work.

How does Workomap record these roles?

The market uses one word — "role" — for two different things, and mixing them makes any count of a community meaningless. A function is what you do: configure, build, architect, lead. An area is what you do it to: Finance, Procurement, Basis & Platform, Data & Analytics, Security & Authorizations. "Basis consultant" names an area; "functional consultant" names a function. Recorded on one axis, the same person could appear as either, and both halves of a city's community could stay below the threshold that makes it visible at all.

So a Workomap profile carries one function and up to three areas. How do these roles connect over a career?

They connect sideways more often than upward: the nearest move from any role is the neighbouring one that already shares its vocabulary.

The most common moves: key user → functional consultant → solution architect; developer → technical consultant → integration or enterprise architect; senior consultant → delivery manager or practice lead.
